In a fascinating study done at the University of London, a team of researchers developed a happiness scale, designed to measure people’s relative sense of wellbeing from moment to moment.

They then devised a formula to calculate how much extra money the average person would have to earn every year to get the same level of happiness as they would from the simple pleasures of a rich life.  Continue reading →

In the late 1980s, I was working as a DJ for Capital Radio in London by day and a stage hypnotist in pubs and clubs by night. While my shows were popular, I couldn’t afford to book myself into a proper theater. I began asking myself some of the wealth-producing questions contained in the ‘Simplest Business Plan’ chapter, and something jumped out at me – Capital Radio owned one of the most prestigious theaters in London!

Was it possible we would be able to do a deal? After reviewing my options, I decided to make an outrageous request of my boss, Richard Park. I was going to ask him to throw in nearly £200,000 worth of radio advertising with the price of the theater rental to help me fill the house for the run of the show. I knew that with that added value, the bank would be willing to pick up the majority of the costs in the form of a secured loan.

Despite my preparation, I was convinced he would turn me down. After all, I was asking him to risk not only his money but the reputation of the radio station. When I’d made my pitch, Richard sat back, seemingly deep in thought. Finally, he looked me in the eyes and said three words I’ll never forget: Continue reading →

All creative artists begin by  making models of their work in some form before creating them in the world. Painters make sketches; architects make computer generated or cardboard models of their buildings. Film directors create storyboards outlining every aspect of their movies, shot by shot, and some of the greatest songs in history began life as a set of lyrics scribbled on a napkin, beer mat or scrap of paper.

Measure twice, cut once. –Proverb

These models and mock-ups allow the artist to see their vision more clearly before they expend the effort to bring their vision to life. It makes it easier for them to notice what’s already there and, more importantly, what’s still missing.

So is the purpose of a business plan. A business plan is a blueprint for a successful company, designed to be constantly adapted as things change and new information becomes available. Continue reading →

One of the most amazing discoveries I had when studying the high achievers for this book was that, while they all have their individual styles in business, they all share the same fundamental strategy for creating wealth. Broadly speaking, that strategy involves thinking about a product, service or business in an entrepreneurial way.

In this chapter I will show you how you can use this same wealth-creating template to create your own successful projects. Continue reading →
