Do you know that amazing state when time seems to slow down and you are able to do and say just the right things at just the right moment? A challenge arises and you handle it perfectly. You are thinking clearly and easily in a relaxed, alert state of clarity and focus.

Athletes refer to this experience as being in ‘the zone’; musicians refer to it as playing in ‘the groove’; psychologists call it living in ‘the flow’.

Scientific research studies into this amazing state show us that everyone experiences it, although some more than others. When you are in the zone, you do what you do better with a greater sense of ease and mastery.

If you get into that state when you are focused on creating wealth, you’ll not only find the ideas begin to flow, but also find yourself enjoying the process more and more.

What most people don’t realize is that the experience of being ‘in the zone’ is a neuro-physiological state. In other words, the flow state is the result of a chemical and electrical change that happens inside you, and therefore you can learn to trigger it more and more of the time.

Here’s a simple exercise that with practice will enable you to create this state any time you choose.

CREATING FLOW

Read all the way through this exercise before you begin …

  1. Stop for a moment and vividly remember a time you were in the zone, doing something you love and loving doing it. It might have been painting, playing tennis, driving, giving a presentation, telling funny stories with friends, designing something. What you were doing doesn’t matter – what matters is how you felt when you were doing it. Any activity you were engaged in where you felt that peak state of flow is perfect.
  1. Keep going through that memory again and again and again until you begin to feel that sense of being in the flow.
  1. When you do, add that feeling into your rich anchor by putting your thumb and middle finger together on your right hand.
  1. Now, continue to hold your newly enhanced rich anchor. While you are feeling rich and in the zone, imagine all the different ways you can make money. See yourself handling any challenges that arise and experience everything flowing perfectly!

The more you practise the exercise, the more familiar you will become with living in the flow. The more you live in and work in flow states, the easier your life will become.

So why don’t we all live in flow all of the time?

When it comes to money, the answer is more in our biology than our psychology …

The biochemistry of fear and greed

Have you ever wondered why no matter how much people have they always seem to want more?

Although the quest for more, bigger and better is so inherent in our culture that most people never question it, there is in fact a biological basis for our drive to succeed.

Here’s how it works:

Whenever we see something we want, our brain releases a neurotransmitter into our bloodstream called ‘dopamine‘. This release of dopamine creates the feeling of craving in our bodies, as if we ‘have to have’ whatever it is that we want. Then, when we actually achieve our desired end result and get what we want, our brains reward us with the ‘feel good’ neurotransmitter called ‘serotonin‘.

The interplay between these two chemical messengers in our body is going on all day, every day. We are continually moving between desire and the achievement of our desire, and the whole game is regulated by our brain chemistry.

When we are watching a football match, as the ball goes up and down the field we release more and more dopamine, building a craving inside our bodies for our team to score a goal. When they do, our brains release serotonin into our bloodstream and we feel fantastic!

The exact same process comes into play when we engage in the pursuit of making money. As our desire to close a deal builds, so does the release of dopamine. This is why some of the wealthiest people in the world continue to work as if their life depended on it – they feel compelled to do so because they’re actually chemically addicted to the feeling of success!

This is why it is so important to work on what you enjoy doing and is aligned with your highest values. If your good feelings in life come only from making money and doing deals, you will wind up pursuing money like a commodity. No matter how much you have, it will never feel like enough.

On the other hand, there are some people who pursue money as a substitute for a feeling of security. They are the ones who feel like they always need a little bit more to be ‘safe’. In this case, the quest for more is driven by the fear of ‘not enough’ – not enough love, not enough self-esteem and not enough good feelings.

All the money in the world can’t fill a hole that’s psychological, not physical. Again, unless we actively step in and take control, our brain chemistry runs the show. In this case, the adrenaline of fear drives the pursuit of money, and the serotonin of success temporarily soothes the fear. It feels so good to get that burst of good feelings that people will literally scare themselves into going out and making even more money, and the vicious cycle continues.

Are you addicted to money?

I have a friend who is conservatively worth over £150 million pounds. Despite his ongoing business success, his first thought when he wakes up in the morning is: Will today be the day that I lose it all?

The point is: If you treat money like a drug, you are likely to become an addict. If you feel like you have to have more money in order to relax and feel good, you are out of control and money is in charge of your life. No matter how much money you accumulate, you will never be rich!

In just a few moments, we are going to turn that pattern around. Simply follow these instructions and you will find yourself back in control.

Getting back into the flow of wealth

Rich thoughts lead to rich feelings, and the richer you feel the richer your life becomes. In order to create greater possibilities in your thinking, it is highly useful to think about money from a place of ease and flow.

The people I have met who I consider to be truly rich are those who live predominantly in the flow, using their wealth as an expression of their deepest values.

The exercise I am about to share with you will enable you to quickly and easily eliminate your fear of lack, and greed of money. It will make it easier and easier for you to relate to money as a simple tool- a way of facilitating the pursuit of what you truly want to be, do and have in your life.

You still keep all of your drive and focus, and at the same time more in control of your feelings. You are able to stay balanced and centered in the flow of wealth.

The technique we are about to do involves tapping on acupuncture points while you imagine being fearful or lustful around money. This will have the effect of desensitizing these negative emotional states (fear and greed) that you have linked to money, and creating a greater sense of balance, peace and neutrality. By the time you have finished the exercise, you will be firmly centered in ‘the money zone’.

DEALING WITH FEAR

Read all the way through this exercise before you begin …

  1. Imagine having lost ALL your money and other financial assets, and rate your fear on a scale of 1 to 10, with 10 being the most fearful and 1 the least. This rating is essential, because in a few moments we will want to know how much better it’s become.
  1. As you focus in, imagine being completely broke, feel the fear and now take 2 fingers of your right hand and tap about 10 times under your left collarbone.
  1. Now tap under your right eye 10 times.
  1. Now tap under your collarbone again.
  1. Place your left hand in front of you and tap on the back of it- a spot down between your ring finger and your little finger. Continue to concentrate on the fear as you do this and each of the steps that follow:
  • Close your eyes and then open them.
  • Keep your head still, keep tapping on your hand.
  • Look down to the right then down to the left.
  • Keep tapping and rotate your eyeballs round 360° clockwise, and then 360° anti-clockwise.

Remember to keep thinking about the fear of being completely broke as you do this.

  • Now hum the first few lines of ‘Happy Birthday’ out loud.
  • Count out loud from 1 to 5.
  • Once again hum the first few lines of ‘Happy Birthday’ out loud.
  1. Stop and check – on a scale from 1 to 10, what number is your fear at now? Keep repeating the tapping steps until your fear is down to 2 or 1.

At this point, you can either take a break or move straight on to the next exercise.

DEALING WITH LUST AND GREED

Read all the way through this exercise before you begin.

  1. Now imagine having unlimited wealth – more money than you could possibly spend in several lifetimes. Feel the desire well up within you and rate your lust and greed on a scale of 1 to 10.
  1. As you focus in, imagine having massive amounts of money and all the things you can do and buy with it, and allow the feelings of lust and greed to come up to the surface. When you’re really feeling it, take two fingers of your left hand and tap about 10 times under your right collarbone.
  1. Now tap under your left eye 10 times.
  1. Now tap under your collarbone again.
  1. Place your right hand in front of you and tap on the back of it- a spot down between your ring finger and your little finger. Continue to concentrate on the lust and greed as you do this and each of the steps that follow:
  • Close your eyes and then open them.
  • Keep your head still, keep tapping on your hand.
  • Look down to the right then down to the left.
  • Keep tapping and rotate your eyeballs round 360° clockwise, and then 360° anti-clockwise.

Remember to keep thinking about the massive amounts of money you were craving as you do this.

  • Now hum the first few lines of ‘Happy Birthday’ out loud.
  • Count out loud from 1 to 5.
  • Once again hum the first few lines of ‘Happy Birthday’ out loud.
  1. Stop and check – on a scale from 1 to 10, what number is your lust and greed down to now? Keep repeating the tapping steps until your greed scale number is down to 2 or 1.

You may need to repeat this two exercises several times in order to clear any residual fear or greed out of your system. You will know that you are done when- you can think about being broke or having all the money in the world with the same simple feeling of peace and ease. Welcome back to the zone!

Frequently asked questions about ‘Tapping Into The Flow of Wealth’:

Q. This feels a bit like ‘cheating’. Shouldn’t flow be something spontaneous that either happens or it doesn’t?

Historically, flow states were thought of as mystical experiences that either happened or they didn’t. Artists and poets would invoke the muse and then sit around drinking wine and waiting for her to show up before they began creating.

Now in the 21st century, we live in an age of leading-edge psychological technology. Because we are so much more aware of how our brains really work, we have more control than ever before. In fact, our understanding of psychology and biochemistry has progressed further in the past 30 years than it had in the previous 300 years. And the state of the art continues to progress. Our increased awareness and control over the power of the mind makes us more stable, more functional and profoundly happier.

Q. I feel really flat after doing the fear and greed exercise. I think I understand getting rid of the fear, but what’s wrong with being excited about making lots of money?

There’s nothing wrong with being excited about making money, but when you get consumed by it, your thinking process becomes corrupted. You start to equate your rich feelings with your bank balance instead of recognizing that ‘rich’ is a state of mind and a quality of being.

Suffering doesn’t come from things or conditions – it comes from our attachment or aversion to them. By eliminating both the fear and the greed – that is, the aversion and the attachment – you become free. You may still have a lot of money and other material things, but they no longer has control over you.

Q. This really seemed to work for me. Am I completely ‘cured’?

Despite everything we have discussed here, there might be times when you once again get caught up in fearful, scarcity thinking and greedy, lustful thinking. When you do, simply stop. Relax. Repeat the tapping exercise as necessary and get yourself right back into the natural flow.
